The UCSC Greenhouses are the primary plant support facilities for the instructional and research programs in the Departments of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology, and Environmental Studies.
Located on the rooftops of central campus science buildings, the three facilities include two dedicated to research and one to instruction.
The Jean H. Langenheim Greenhouses, the instructional facility, is open to the public Monday–Friday, 9:00 am–3:00 pm, and houses a botanical collection, lab, library, and outdoor seating. Access it via the west stairwell of Thimann Labs!
Mission Statement
The UCSC Greenhouses is an interdivisional facility that is a resource for plant instruction and research supported by the Division of Physical and Biological Sciences and the Division of Social Sciences.
We are dedicated to providing a safe, clean, efficient and organized facility that is open to UCSC community for the pursuit of education and research.
To this end we will provide:
1. An instructional facility that welcomes learning and teaching.
2. A quality botanical collection to be used by programs supported by our constituents and a well equipped facility to host classes.
3. An ability to work with professors, teaching assistance and students to support intensive learning that reflects the standards set by the University of California.
4. A refined research facility that is ready and able to host projects supported by our faculty representatives.
5. Quality plant care.
6. Experienced and innovative technical expertise and devoted and helpful service.
Whether you’re a student, researcher, or instructor, get involved with the UCSC Greenhouses!
Students can get involved by joining our volunteer program, applying for a work study job or internship, participating in faculty-sponsored research, or just coming up to explore our instructional facility!
Researchers can use our recharge facilities for their projects.
Instructors and TAs can make arrangements to hold classes or office hours at the Jean H Langenheim Greenhouses on Thimann Labs rooftop. Contact the UCSC Greenhouse Director to schedule your class activities or meetings.
